Writing short articles of around 300-500 words is an excellent way to promote your site. There are a lot of Article sites that accept your content as free to republish. By writing 2 or 3 articles on topics similar to your site and linking your site from the resource box you will gain not only links but typically some traffic to your site.
The Idea here is to basically "give away" some information that could be used, in exchange for a backlink. The Idea of doing more than 1 article is that by providing more content, more people are likely to use it as free content on their own site.
