Your site is finally finished and now you are about to start getting it indexed by the Search Engines. We will look at the Search Engines and how to get Indexed and monitoring what is indexed.
The very first thing that you want is to work out the best way to get your site indexed by the Search Engines. All of the SE's allow you to add your site.
For all new websites it is a good Idea to go to each of the Search Engines and submit your new site. It is worth the effort to do this for at least the big 3 Search Engines which are Google, MSN and Yahoo. They are generally referred to as the big three, as once your site moves up the SERPS they bring you the most amount of traffic.
Anther way to get your site indexed is to add a link from one of your exisiting established sites pointing to your new site. The SE Spiders will follow the link from the established site and index the new site.
Just by submitting your site to be indexed does not mean it will happen straight away. Once you submit your site, it can take as long as 8 weeks to be indexed! In our experience, getting 1 or 2 links to your new site from established sites will get you indexed much quicker - sometimes within 1-2 days.
Another way of getting your site noticed by the SE's is to submit a sitemap. Both Google and Yahoo By following the instructions and submitting a sitemap you are likely to be indexed reasonably fast.
Once you have submitted your site to the SE's the next thing you will want to do is check if your site is indexed. By using the Indexed Pages Tool you can check if your site has been indexed. Nearly All web hosts provides you stats about your site. Our host provides AWStats which provides information on what SE Spiders have visited and their last visit.
One of the advantages of submitting your sitemap to Google is that over time, you gain access to a lot of stats about your site and how people find it. The value of this information alone makes it worth the effort.
Once your site is being regularly visited by the SE spiders, you have acheived the first objective. The objective was of couser to be indexed. Getting your site Indexed was pretty easy now wasn't it.
Once you have verified that your Site has been indexed, it is time to start monitoring other aspects such as the SERPS position using the SERP Checking Tool.
